About Fumapem AM-40 - PBI Copolymer

Brand: FuMA-Tech
Product Code: 5041632

FumapemAM-40 is a non-reinforced Polybenzimidazole Copolymer membranedesigned for use in High-Temperature Proton Electrolyte Fuel Cells (HT-PEMFC).The polymer backbone for this HT-PEMFC membrane is categorized as a hydrocarbonpolymer material.

FumapemAM-40 membrane comes in either a 10cm x 10cm or 20cm x 30cm size sheet. Themembrane is the brown foil delivered in dry form.

Fumatechmembranes are highly sensitive to differences in humidity and moisture content. Therefore the membranes can vary +/- 0.5cm from the original cut sizes. Alsodue to this sensitivity the manufacturer expects wrinkles to form, howeversoaking the membranes in deionized water will return the membranes to the fullsize planar state according to the manufacturer.

FumapemAM-40 Features:

Applications: High-Temperature PEM Fuel Cell (HT-PEMFC).
 Thickness: 40 micrometers (1.57 mil)
 Sizes: 10cm x 10cm, 20cm x 30cm

Handling:

Keep membrane packageclosed / sealed when unused. Store, handle and process the membrane in a cleanand dust-free area. Use only new and sharp knives or blades, when cutting themembrane. Always wear protective gloves when handling the membrane. Handle withcare, be sure not to puncture, crease or scratch the membrane, otherwise leakswill occur. All surfaces in contact with the membrane during handling, inspection, storage and mounting must be smooth and free of sharp projections.

Dopingwith Phosphoric Acid Recommendation:

Put the membrane sample in85 wt % H3PO4 at temperatures between 90C and 160C for at least 1 hour.Membranes must be covered by phosphoric acid. Membranes will expand whensubject to doping process.

If you have any concernsabout storage, chemical stability, pre-treatment or before proceeding, pleasefeel free to contact us for further information.

LongTerm Storage:

Themembrane can be stored dry for an unlimited amount of time. However, themembrane has to be conditioned (washed and rinsed) prior to use.

Superior Ionic Conductivity & Temperature Stability

Fumapem AM-40 delivers ionic conductivity above 0.1 S/cm at 80C when hydrated and remains stable up to 180C, making it dependable for processes running at elevated temperatures. Its advanced PBI copolymer structure ensures consistent performance throughout demanding applications in fuel cells, electrolyzers, and chemical processing.

Versatile Applications in Electrochemical Systems

Designed for versatility, Fumapem AM-40 is ideally suited for use in PEM fuel cells, electrolyzers, hydrogen production units, and industrial separation membranes. Its smooth finish and high mechanical strength support durable operation even in rigorous chemical environments.

Optimized Physical and Chemical Properties

This membrane combines high water uptake (40-60%) and Shore D hardness (40-45) for mechanical reliability, plus a density of 1.40 g/cm3. The homogeneous, non-reinforced film ensures consistent quality and ease of handling, whether delivered in rolls or sheets.

FAQ's of Fumapem AM-40 - PBI Copolymer:

Q: How do you store Fumapem AM-40 membranes to maintain their quality?

A: Fumapem AM-40 should be stored in a dry environment at room temperature. Proper storage prevents excessive humidity exposure, which preserves its mechanical and chemical properties for optimal performance.

Q: What are the primary benefits of using Fumapem AM-40 in fuel cells?

A: Fumapem AM-40 offers high proton conductivity, stability up to 180C, and resilience under hydrated conditions. Its robust mechanical strength and homogeneous structure make it particularly reliable for PEM fuel cell operations.

Q: When is Fumapem AM-40 recommended over reinforced membranes?

A: Fumapem AM-40 is ideal when high chemical stability, superior ionic conductivity, and flexibility are required, and mechanical reinforcement is not necessary. Applications include scientific research, hydrogen production, and industrial membrane processes.

Q: Where can Fumapem AM-40 be purchased in the United States?

A: Fumapem AM-40 membranes are available through distributors, retailers, manufacturers, suppliers, and traders across the United States. They can be ordered in both roll and sheet formats to suit specific project requirements.

Q: What process is used to achieve the smooth finish of Fumapem AM-40?

A: Fumapem AM-40 is manufactured as a non-reinforced, homogeneous film of PBI copolymer, ensuring a smooth surface without embedded supports. This process guarantees uniformity and reliability in performance.

Q: How can the membrane's water uptake impact its usage?

A: The membrane's high water uptake (40-60% by weight) enhances ionic conductivity in hydrated environments, improving efficiency and effectiveness when used in electrochemical systems at elevated temperatures.
